History of the Club The Association of Model Submariners was formed in 1982 by Roger Serpell, in order to bring together British submarine modelling enthusiasts to pool their resources, information and experiences. Whilst visiting the Model Engineering Exhibition in London he was talking to some of the exhibitors when the conversation came round to the subject of working model submarines and the general lack of information in the modelling press. After some discussion it was agreed that information was very limited, mainly because most people interested in this very specialist area tended to work in isolation. Roger considered that it might be a good idea if the limited information on model submarines could be pooled and made available to like minded individuals. The Association of Model Submariners is generally recognised as the oldest club in the world that deals solely with the hobby of submarine modelling in all its many facets. In August 1986 the club members presented Roger with a special award "For his work and dedication to the Association of Model Submariners", together with the honorary title of 'Commodore' and life membership of the club. |
